While this may bring to mind specialized platforms, such as handheld PDAs, those who take their software serious are beginning to experience bouts of anxiety whenever major manufacturers schedule newsworthy announcement. Much like music lovers were quick to switch from A-track to cassette, from cassette to vinyl, and from vinyl to CD, they have since slowed down considerably whenever a new technology hits the market – after all, those who spend a lot of money to be on the cutting edge and possess the most advanced software for other technologies that is on the market do want to know that they are not wasting another two or three paychecks on a gizmo that is obsolete tomorrow.

Thus it is no surprise that aficionados of the latest and greatest software - for other technologies or for the tried and true personal computer technologies that have already established themselves – are presently having a bitter taste in their collective mouth, ever since Palm announced that it would release the Foleo Mobile Companion which is to be the mate for smart phones and run through the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on a Linux kernel variant that has currently not been further defined.

While software for other technologies has always been eyed with a bit of suspicion, to some this companion is a flagrant attempt at cashing in on the smart phone market while still not offering a fully functioning notebook version either. Cleverly named a sub-notebook, several limitations have shown this technology to be but a springboard for costly upgrades – perhaps from the camp that advertises software for other technologies – and the inability to have video playback makes serious computer users green with fury.

Yet this fury is not so much aimed at the limitations the Foleo is already slated to experience; instead it is a somewhat helpless anger by those who want, need, and feel would have great use for technology that would enable them to have computer access, especially Internet access, with the help of a smart phone when unable to tap into a WiFi net, but at the same time do not want to lug around a full sized, heavy notebook computer. Already sensing the need for future upgrades and trade-ins, buffs are in a huff yet understand that in light of the dawn of new technology all that is left to do is bow your head and hand over the credit card – you know you will buy it!
